What is .scr files?

A .scr file (short for "screensaver") is a type of file commonly used by Microsoft Windows operating systems to display animated or static images or graphics when the computer is idle. When a screensaver is activated, the system replaces the desktop or active window with an animation or image that is visually pleasing or entertaining. Screensavers are often used as a display option to reduce "burn-in" on older computer monitors that may cause screen damage if an image is displayed in the same position for extended periods of time.

SCR files are executable files and are often used by malware to spread infections through email or malicious websites. Due to this reason, SCR files should only be downloaded from trusted sources. Additionally, it is important to note that newer computer monitors are less susceptible to burn-in, so the use of screensavers is not as necessary as it once was.
